[2025 Addendum….sorry for the long-winded]
Our second of three reruns which we’re releasing for July, and second of three reruns celebrating the memory of Masters of VGM (“MoVGM”), and the second of three of my bids to drum up excitement for the “VGM Hall of Fame” (“HoF”) series spearheaded by Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself (as well as any other shows which have elected to join us in the time since my drafting this on July 2nd) is just one of, this time, four contributions we made to the series that year. I’ll share links to the other three below, as well as two other bonus links which are acutely relevant to two of them (as well as to C1E96, our “fresh episode” from last month).
The Theme of 2023’s MoVGM was sort of the opposite of the year prior. 2022’s theme was a celebration of “big named composers”, like Yuzo Koshiro or Nobuo Uematsu, or The Follin Brothers and so on. Names that probably EVERYBODY already knows, 2023’s theme was “unsung and undersung composers”. Names that were not nearly as well-known as they should be. And so, our Channel 2 contribution followed the same format and design philosophy of our 2022, only with the opposite theme. It’s a little longer, though, because in addition to the same “four and four” as before, we added a ninth and final pair - tracks by unknown composers”.
Production notes on this episode relative to the 2022 rerun: by this time, two major changes had happened: 1) I had upgraded from the $100 RODE Podmic I had been using to the current $400 Shure SM7B that I use today, and 2) I had started actively editing out “Umm”s from our conversation. I can’t guarantee that I caught every single one of them. But they’ll certainly be much less present and much less invasive. It still won't rise to the level of a 2025 production (and sounds a little worse with the SM7B’s presence boost turned on at the time, which I’ve since turned off), but it comes appreciably closer than C2E8.
Links to the other 2023 Nerd Noise Radio MoVGM contributions:
C1E76: “The Big Sound of the Little Guy - vol. 2” (originally released 06/01/2023 - the episode which kicked off MoVGM 2023 at large):

Ch F: “Highlights from ‘Stray’” (originally released 06/29/2023):
https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/channel-f-highlights-fromstray-masters-of-vgm
Ch F: Composer Mini-Focus: rayjkayj (originally released 07/26/2023 - also, this might’ve been the final MoVGM 2023 episode as well, meaning, I might’ve gotten to provide both “bookends” to that year’s celebration!)
https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/channel-f-composer-minifocus-rayjkayj-masters-of-vgm
Lastly, two bonus links which relate to the above:
1) C1E30: Big Sound of the Little Guy - vol. 1 (originally released 09/14/2018 - apologies for the atrocious production quality and anemic intro, but the music collection itself is GREAT!) - not only is this obviously relevant to C1E76 above, but it’s also relevant to last month’s C1E96, which was (unofficially, but for all intents and purposes) “Big Sound of the Little Guy vol 3”:
2) C1E73: “UNKAYJ THE RAYJ” (originally released ) - guest-hosted by rayjkayj himself, the above minifocus on rayjkayj was comprised of outtakes from this original episode:
https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/ch-1-noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-c1e73-unkayj-the-rayj
…and with that, I’ll leave you with C2E13: “Songs of the Unsung” (originally released 07/06/2023) - a title which I came up with, and if we’re being honest, I’m probably WAY too proud of!). :-D
Enjoy!

[2025 Addendum….sorry for the ultra long-winded]
Normally, we only share one rerun a month at Nerd Noise Radio. But due to the confluence of a) our having missed the May rerun completely, b) our not getting a June rerun out until the very end of the month, and c) a very important thematic connection to an event currently happening in the VGM podcast scene this month, I’m releasing…..not one……not two……not four…..but THREE reruns in July!
From 2022 through 2024, the greater VGM podcast community participated in a glorious group experiment called “Masters of VGM” (or “MoVGM” for short - I think I might’ve even been the one to coin the shorthand…..maybe), where a master theme was decided upon by the community, and then every participating podcast would do an episode, or a handful of episodes in keeping with the crowdsourced theme. Nerd Noise Radio participated all three years - with a Channel 2 in 2022, a Channel 1 in 2024, and in 2023, with a whopping FOUR installments where we had a Channel 1, a Channel 2, and two Channel Fs. Channel F, for the new faces in the crowd is our mechanism for betas, and bonuses, and things which just don’t fit the mold for a regular episode. Channel F is “format agnostic” and does not have any sort of regular release cadence whatsoever. So, “F-isodes” as I call them (and am probably WAY too proud of myself for that), can be just whatever, and come out just whenever.
The people who devised and oversaw MoVGM have largely significantly reduced their presence in the podcast scene over the past couple years, and so had elected to not continue MoVGM into 2025. However, a handful of us, Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself have decided that, while not formally reviving MoVGM, we were going to do something of our own, in that same spirit. While the name hasn’t been officially finalized as of this writing on July 2nd, and could still change, the “working title” (that will very likely become the final title), which was proposed by Professor Tom is “VGM Hall of Fame” I’ll go ahead and dub it “HoF” for short.
Naturally, we’re trying to also inspire other podcasters to join us so that it is not just we three, but at the very, very least, there will be an HoF episode from all of us on the theme of “a soundtrack that belongs in a theoretical “VGM Hall of Fame” (hence the name). Nerd Noise Radio’s contribution to this will be a Channel 1 featuring the Super Metroid soundtrack (C1E97). If I have the time, and the mental energy, I might also supplement this with an F-isode on a much more obscure soundtrack that begs to enjoy greater awareness and celebration (Lucid 9, if it ends up happening).
One other major difference between HoF and MoVGM is that MoVGM occurred in June (2023 was so big that it extended into July) where HoF will occur in July. We all wanted to do this in June, but we were all too deep into production of our respective June content at the time that we all agreed to just push it back to July instead.
Anyway, over the river and through the woods, to the point I *FINALLY* get: in a bid to not only help draw extra attention to HoF and hopefully drum up a little excitement for it, among both listeners as well as other podcasters, especially prospective participants, as well as to simply celebrate some of the glory that was this remarkable moment in time for a community, this month, I will rerun our 2022 MoVGM contribution, our 2023 Channel 2 contribution, which was a sort of “spiritual sequel” to our 2022 outing (with links to our other 2023 contributions in that rerun’s show notes), and finally, to our 2024 offering. And naturally, we’ll start with 2022.
The theme of 2022 was “which composers would you put on your ‘VGM Mount Rushmore’”? So everyone was to pick four composers. Since Ch 2 was Hugues and I, rather than picking just two, we each picked four for a grand total, of course, of eight, and then did a thing where we each picked one track from each of the eight composers (one each for our own composers, as well as one each for the other guys’ composers). With this being a 2022 production, all the usual caveats about production quality differences and deficiencies. Between a lesser mic and less fully developed production techniques, the sound quality will not be up to the standards of a 2025 episode (I also hadn’t started editing out the “umms” yet….apologies for that!). But it’s still pretty decent. Certainly decent enough that it doesn’t really feel like a barrier to enjoyment like, say, a 2018, or especially 2017 episode would be.
And so, without further ado: our first of three reruns this month, the first of three to celebrate the memory of MoVGM as well as hopefully whet people’s appetites for HoF: C2E8: “Our Four Favorites” - originally released 06/30/2022.
Enjoy!

NOTE ON BACKUP [bad] AUDIO - SHORT[ISH] VERSION: when Hugues and I meet, we have our Google Meet output recording, as well as each having higher quality Audacity recordings of just our own sides of the conversation. We keep the Meet recording in case there is an emergency with the Audacity recording, but otherwise don't use it in the final episode, and I just align and combine our high quality Audacity recordings. On this episode, however, (a first for Ch 2) we lost a portion of Hugues' Audacity recording, so we did have to use our fallback a little bit. At the very bottom of the show notes, I'll include a LONG[ISH] VERSION which explains more. I did everything I could to minimize the impact of the Google Meet recording in the final episode. But it is noticeable at points.

[Ch 1] "Noise from the Hearts of Nerds" - “C1E96: Full Steam Ahead”
Thursday Jun 26, 2025
Thursday Jun 26, 2025
Today’s broadcast is C1E96 for Theme Thursday, June 26th, 2025 (happy 27th "dating" anniversary to my dear wife, St. Jodee). Today’s theme is a collection of music from games in my own personal Steam Library – planned, curated, produced, and distributed entirely on/from the Steam Deck (SteamOS desktop mode)! A collection dominated by music from indie games from the 2010's and 2020's and peppered with music from bigger-named games from the 1990's and 2000's and contains not one, but TWO chill zones, which collectively account for almost half of the mixtape runtime! Special thanks to Professor Tom from Shujin Acadamy VGM Club podcast for helping me settle on episode title. Other candidate titles I'd been considering included "Gimme Steam" (which was the working title), "Steam Punk", and "All Hands on Deck". Lastly, this is our debut episode on Terra Player!

[Ch 1] "Noise from the Hearts of Nerds" - “C1E95: VibeOff Vrijdag”
Friday May 09, 2025
Friday May 09, 2025
Today’s broadcast is C1E95 for VibeOff Vrijdag, May 9th, 2025. Today’s broadcast will be a one-time-only special twist on a FaceOff Friday, where, instead of comparing different versions of the same track against each other, we're comparing pairs (and occasionally trios) of different songs against each other which either have similar movements, or melodies, or instrumentation, or simply just vibes and asking you, the listener to not only tell us which one you like better, but whether or not the comparisons are even valid, and how strongly or weakly if so. So, in lieu of an 8th and final FaceOff Friday episode, Nerd Noise Radio is pleased to present: VibeOff Vrijdag (Vrijdag = the Dutch word for Friday). See the show notes for a link to a document which will allow you to grade me on these comparisons if you so choose!

2025 Show Notes Amendment:
I love the setup we have here where on the first day of the month, we released our final ever TwoFer Tuesday, and now, here at the last day of the month, we re-release our first ever TwoFer Tuesday! It feels like a wonder twist on "bookends".
As always when re-running early episodes, please excuse the atrocious production quality. One of my favorite things looking back on the early episodes of the show is how "different, yet the same" they are. From a sound quality perspective, the differences are night and day in every aspect. But in terms of show format and events, other than missing the now customary summary introduction, and the fact that they've gradually gotten longer over the years, it's the same darned show that it's always been. And what the early episodes lack in polish and finesse and technique and maturity, they somewhat make up for in youthful exuberance and wide-eyed optimism, and a simply innocent fun. You've heard the latest and greatest of TwoFer Tuesday this month, now hear the awkward first baby steps!....different....yet the same....
Lastly, I had toyed with the idea of doing three reruns this month - today's rerun, as well as the two highlighted April Fool's episodes: 2020's "Backtracks" (where all the tracks played in reverse), and 2024's "Parallels" (where all the tracks played over top of each other all at once). But I had procrastinated, and now it's the last day of the month, and it would simply obscene of me to upload three reruns in one day. So the compromise that I settled on was to include links to them here in the show notes, in case you wanted to revisit them (or perhaps experience them for the first time). So, here are the links, Backtracks first, then Parallels. In terms of production value, Backtracks is dramatically better than today's rerun, but also dramatically lesser than our current works, whereas Parallels is very close to our current level of production :

https://nerdnoiseradio.podbean.com/e/ch-1-noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-c1e83-parallels/
And now, the [otherwise unmodified] original episode shownotes! Enjoy!

Option 1: Subscribe right here to the "Nerd Noise Radio Network - All Channels" podcast feed. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed.
Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 episodes, and not in any of the other channels, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. If this is what you want instead, here's the RSS:
http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss
NOTE: This episode had to be trimmed for the “Channel 1” feed to make it and Episode 3 both fit within the two hour limit for the month. The shortened version is called “Episode 4a” (C1E4a), where the full-length version is simply called “Episode 4” (C1E4).

2025 re-run bonus notes:
This episode is the third in a trilogy of music blocks (parts 1 and 2 were our January and February reruns). Long time listeners may already know what this trilogy is all about, but for those who don't and have been following the reruns, the introduction to this episode finally explains what the trilogy is all about.
So, the fun [for me] question: of the three music blocks in the trilogy, which did you like best (and why), which did you like least (and why), and do you or do you not think I made the right decision bumping "music block A" for "music block B" in C1E41? Let me know at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com, or by any social media outlet on which we exist. I will genuinely be curious to know what you think. Even to this day in 2025, I *STILL* don't know what to think, personally!
DISCLAIMER: the production value was worse in 2022 when the intro and outro were produced, and substantially worse in 2018 when the music block was produced. So if this is your first time hearing Nerd Noise Radio, please keep in mind that our production values have much improved in the time since.

Music Block Runtime: 01:25:40 / Total Episode Runtime: 01:43:57
Our Intro and Outro Music is Funky Radio, from Jet Grind Radio on the Sega Dreamcast, composed by BB Rights.
Intro / Outro / Final Production produced using Ardour 6 / Audacity 3 in Ubuntu Studio [Linux] 22.04 09/08/2022. Music Block produced in GarageBand in macOS 10/19/2018.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The tools and techniques I used back in 2018 in producing the music block were NOT up to my current standards – including featuring less sophisticated fades, more imprecise volume level balancing, less developed track run-order sorting, and even my having used MP3s rather than WAVs in the source production, resulting in a lower-fidelity final product, and further limiting my ability to touch it up after the fact. As such, the production value of this episode will NOT be to par with our current "fresh episodes". But production values aside, the quality of the CONTENT itself, otherwise, I feel, is excellent, and well worth digging up to share with you.....I hope that you'll agree! :-)
You can also find all of our audio episodes on Archive.org as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.

Our Intro and Outro Music is Funky Radio, from Jet Grind Radio on the Sega Dreamcast, composed by BB Rights.
Produced using a nearly equal mix of Audacity and Ardour in Fedora Linux on an ASUS ROG Zephyrus 14 (2023) laptop with perhaps a little support from a Dell Latitude 7480 (also running Fedora Linux) or the Steam Deck (running Steam OS). Recorded with a Shure SM7B XLR dynamic microphone on a RØDE PSA1+ boom arm through a Cloudlifter and a Focusrite 4i4 XLR-to-USB interface!
