[Ch F] MEGA MIX: Channel 2 - Season 3 - ALL MUSIC [MUSIC-ONLY!]
Sunday Dec 17, 2023
Sunday Dec 17, 2023
Today's Broadcast is the entire collection of every single track featured on Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2 during Calendar 2023 (Season 3).
All the conversation and dialog have been scrapped, so these are music-only. 5 little mini-blocks, kinda like 5 little "mini Ch 1s with no intros or outros", all shared back to back....to back, to back, to back. C2R3 (our best of year in review episode - as in "Channel 2 Retrospective 3") is coming very soon, and today's MEGA MIX collection is meant to induce a little excitement for that! Do you think you can suss out which tracks will be chosen by each host? C2R3 will feature four tracks from each episode (one track of each host....by each host - a la HH HJ JH JJ) plus one "wildcard" track apiece - which are used as the episode bookends.
NOTE 1: The tracks will be presented here in the same order in which they appeared in the original episodes, which in the case of C2E11, C2E12, C2E14, and C2E15 should all flow pretty naturally, as we do strive for at least some solid flow in the track ordering. However, since C2E13 is a focus on composers and follows the composer flow instead of the musical flow, that portion of today's journey may seem more haphazard and all over the place as a result. :-)
NOTE 2: With the lone exception of C2E13, Hugues and I take perfect turns sharing tracks on the episodes, as in, like JHJHJHJ or HJHJHJHJ. But with C2E13, we were taking turns by composer, rather than by track, and we'd each pick a track from each composer, resulting in a turn order that looks more like JHHJJHHJJHHJJH. If you're interested in following along with who picked what as you listen, you're probably better served to follow the track notes for C2E13. With the others, you just have to know who's going first, but C2E13 is more complex, and would require more attention.

PRODUCER’S NOTES:
1) the background music during the talking portions were “baked into the recording” and for whatever reason, the left channel was completely missing. I mixed it down to mono for the episode so that it would at least come out of both speakers (and would be louder in the mix), but half the track info is still missing. I typically do not produce episodes this way, but this is what I had to work with in the studio context, and was unable to do anything else about it in post.
2) Usually, each voice is recorded separately so that I can adjust levels and apply compression etc to each element individually. In the case of this recording, all three voices, as well as the background music were all on just one track, so I could not adjust individual components individually. And in addition to the problems mentioned above with the background music, St. John’s mic was hotter than Adam’s and Elijah’s since I was sitting closer to the mic than they were. I was able to mostly correct for this in post by applying more compression / limiter / amplify passes than are usually required. I think the final results on this point are actually pretty reasonably good, and this actually had the latent benefit of only further raising the volume on the BGM as well - which had been too quiet originally.
3) This part SUPER excites me! The ISU radio studio used Electro-Voice RE20 mics, where St. John typically records using a Shure SM7B. These two mics are within $50 in price of each other, and are collectively the #1 and #2 most commonly used mics in professional radio and professional podcasting contexts. I had always wondered and worried whether or not I made the right choice going SM7B instead of RE20, and how my voice would sound on the RE20 instead. This experience gave me the opportunity to find out, and I think the RE20 sounds fantastic! The jury’s still out for me on which one I actually sound BETTER on, though, because I think the SM7B sounds pretty amazing as well. So any gearheads listening to this episode and reading these notes, please listen to either C2E13, C2E14, or C2E15 to serve as a comparative to this RE20-propelled episode and let me know which sound you prefer. It seems so far to be VERY dependent upon which set of headphones / speakers on which I'm listening to them. So I could -REALLY- use some second and third opinions etc. The SM7B recordings are brighter and more “natural” sounding (since I have the SM7B’s “presence boost” feature enabled - a feature which the RE20 lacks), where the RE20 recording is warmer, rounder, deeper, and has more of that great “rrraadiiiooo” sound that I’ve actually been chasing after this entire time. The drawbacks are that the SM7B can sound a little thin and reedy, while the RE20 can sound a little muddy and boomy. I had talked about it depending on the speaker source. On some, the SM7B sounds thin and reedy while the RE20 sounds amazing, and on others, the RE20 sounds boomy and muddy while the SM7B sounds great! So, give em both a listen, and lemme know. I’m -VERY- tempted to buy an RE20 now after this experience, but if the consensus prefers me on the $400 SM7B which I already own, then perhaps that saves me the $450! You know, perhaps I'll just buy the RE20 anyway and try recording on both at the same time in the hopes of getting a best of both when I blend them in post.
4) Unlike with typical NNR episodes, track extensions do not loop smoothly, but “hard end and hard begin” to preserve how they appear on the album. It’s a clunkier-sounding experience this way, but it was done to preserve the album content.
5) In the case of most of these tracks, I was able to sync the imposed high-quality audio files from the non-speaking portions to the BGM handoff points in the speaking portions. However, there were a handful that were near-misses. I hid these as best as I could, and doubt it’ll create any listening difficulties, but I did want to acknowledge them. :-)

Link to C1E35: The Floppy Show (forgive the production quality - which was much worse in 2018. But production quality value aside, this is still a really great collection of music - all from computer games! Also the Ch 1 intros were much more anemic back then, and wouldn’t improve until January 2022 - C1E61! But it’s still a close enough approximation to today’s Channel 1 episodes that if you’re new to Ch 1, it’ll still give you a very good idea of what the show is all about):
Comparing KDE and Gnome:
KDE: Think “Super-powered Windows 7” - also, insanely customizable, but still feels kinda “old” to use - like you’d expect from a “super powered Windows 7”. Also feels “heavier”, despite the fact that it is just the opposite. By default more flat and angular.
Gnome: Think “Parallel Universe macOS” - a lot less customizable (though still a bit more customizable than Windows or Mac), but very sleek and modern, and behaves like a thoroughly modern OS - like you’d expect from a “parallel universe macOS”. Feels “lighter” even though it’s not. By default, softer and more rounded.

In light of the recent turn of events involving Spotify, and its impact to Nerd Noise Radio in particular, the VGM podcast scene more broadly, and even music podcasts of all types, I wanted to get a special announcement up right away about what's going on, and how Nerd Noise Radio is responding. This announcement is most directly applicable to our Spotify listeners, but applicable more broadly to all listeners of Nerd Noise Radio, and even to non-listeners in the VGM podcast scene - particularly to our fellow podcasters, be they NNR listeners or not.

Our intro music is the Sega CD Model 2 (North American) BIOS [boot screen] music, composed by David Javelosa. No outro music.
Produced by Hugues, using whatever he typically uses to record and produce. I know this involves Ubuntu Linux (Unity desktop, but not Ubuntu Unity), and a Blue Snowball USB condenser mic. Beyond that, I have no idea! - St. John :-)

[EDITOR’S NOTE: This episode is the flip-side of the C1E79 coin in that where C1E79 was the final episode of NNR ever to be recorded and produced by a non-confirmed autistic person (with the conversation occurring from the perspective of two people who didn’t know for sure yet, and had to be tentative and hesitant about it all), C2E14 is the first episode of NNR ever to be recorded and produced by a confirmed autistic (and where the conversation could occur from a place of certainty and finality). Apologies if anyone feels like I’m making too big of a deal about all of this, but you have to understand that this diagnosis changes EVERYTHING for me! It feels like a 43yr chapter of my life has ended and a new chapter of greater clarity, optimism, self-love, and opportunity has begun. It simply means that much to me, gang! I promise that I won’t keep talking a ton about it for the rest of time - or if I do, I will do so on a separate program dedicated specifically to the subject, but I do beg you to bear with me for now, while this is all still so new for me. :-)
Also, another “flip-side of the coin” situation between this and C1E79, which didn’t get discussed in the episode: In a certain manner of speaking, each episode are “the first episode ever to be produced in Fedora”. The mic time on both episodes were done on “the Big Rig”, which is running Arch-Based “Garuda KDE Dr460nized”, but the rest of the production was done on laptops. In the case of C1E79, the main laptop (which had been running Arch-based Endeavor OS [KDE] at the time) was out of commission awaiting a motherboard replacement, so all the production had to be done on one of my backup laptops, where I had just so happened to be “auditioning” Fedora 38 (Gnome) at the time. I ended up liking it so much that once the main laptop was repaired, I ended up replacing Endeavor with Fedora 38 (Gnome) - which was where all the production of this episode (minus the mic-time) happened. So, in a certain manner of speaking, both episodes were a “first time on Fedora” situation. Also, just as Arch-based Linux supplanted Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based distros, I feel like Fedora and Fedora-based is what is next to supplant Arch. Also, I think it’s official: I’m a Gnome convert. My “KDE-first” days indeed appear to be over for the time-being at least. I’ve even since replaced Garuda KDE Dr460nized with Garuda Gnome, but not until after all the mic recordings had been completed.]
Links to Autism tests - again, DO NOT take these test results as a SUBSTITUTE for a formal diagnosis by a trained professional. On the other hand, these tests are VERY reliable, so if they do indicate you have autism, you very likely do. Therefore, the advice of St. John is to take the test results and find a professional with whom you can show and discuss them:

[EDITOR'S NOTE: In addition to being a really special episode for me already in that it features one of my all-time best personal friends, and also includes a really fun, really touching extended conversation between us at the end of the episode (which we're somewhat euphemistically calling an "interview"), or even for the episode featuring an "SM7B vs Podmic" mic comparison by way of the intro / outro [SM7B] vs "interview" [Podmic], which is the kinda stuff that I really geek (even if very few others do), perhaps most special of all for me is that this episode will also go down in history as being the very last episode of NNR ever to be produced by a non-confirmed autistic person. Though this episode is releasing AFTER my diagnosis, it was recorded and produced PRIOR, and therefore, all the both scripted and unscripted dialog was had from the perspective of someone who only THOUGHT he was autistic, as opposed to the person who now KNOWS he is. Both my side of the conversation, and my friend's side were each occurring from within "the suspension of the pending", from the absence of certainty. Now, in retrospect, it turns out we were right. But we didn't KNOW that at the time. So to hear everything that is said from within that paradigm, especially knowing from hindsight how it all plays out, to me, at least, makes it all feel so precious, and gives it, I dunno, something of a sense of innocence, I guess. And that, along with all the other aspects mentioned above make this a very, VERY special episode for me. Hopefully you'll agree! -St. John]

Wednesday Jul 26, 2023
Today’s F-isode features video game music works from chipist and fellow VGM Podcaster, AJ Reyes, better known as “rayjkayj” of the VGM podcast VGMporium, and is our final contribution (of four) to MoVGM - season 2. A fifth was planned, but “man plans and COVID laughs”. Apologies also for a few “production shortcuts” used here due to the last minute nature of the production, as delayed by said interloper. Lastly, these tracks were all outtakes from C1E73 - UNKAYJ THE RAYJ!
All tracks composed and arranged by rayjkayj using VGMusicMaker, Deflemask and Sunvox. VGMporium can be found on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/4dmLZz58rXVtsnw7spiqBE?si=6839ea33fc094c81

Thanks again to AJ for sharing these track with me, and for allowing me to feature his works, now, TWICE on Nerd Noise Radio. Perhaps we’ll see him here again in the future! Lastly, though I will keep the details to myself for now, be on the lookout for a St. John appearance on VGMporium sometime in the future! We have our subject planned, we just don’t know when it will be yet. :-)
Cheers!
